MCC Women’s basketball red hot with five game win streak

Mesa Community College Women’s basketball is on a five-game win streak and going to make the Arizona Community College (ACCAC) Playoffs MCC started their winning streak after the decisive loss, 65-45, to the No. 1 women of Cochise College. Lady T-Birds has beaten Pima, Phoenix, South Mountain, Glendale, and Arizona Western. Mesa could have had its streak snapped by the Matadors of Arizona Western, but held on for the last 40 seconds to win 46-44. Phoenix College was the Lady T-Birds next opponent following the game against the Pima Aztecs. Mesa hit the away court and lit up the hardwood with 28 points in the first quarter.

MCC’s first quarter lead would prove to be enough to put a W in the win column. The Thunderbirds would only outscore the Bears by one in the third quarter. Deja Dagons would be the top scorer with 14 points for the Thunderbirds. Leah Goodman would follow her with 12 points. Diamond Fuller and Cheyenne Begay would both have 10 points in the T-Birds win, with all of their teammates contributing. Mesa would shoot 37.5 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from 3-point territory. South Mountain Community College (SMCC) would be next on the chopping block for Mesa. The Thunderbirds would dominate the Cougars the entire game at home.

They won the points battle every quarter, especially in the second, 26-13, and fourth, 21-9.  Every woman on the team would play on the hardwood and all of them would have points and contributions in the game. Mesa would shoot 45.2 percent for the game and 36.8 percent from beyond the arc. Glendale Community College (GCC) would enter the Theo J. Heap gymnasium to face the sizzling T-Birds. The Gauchos would not be able to squelch the fire. GCC would fall to MCC in the first, 18-11, and third, 19-14. However, they would win the second quarter by one, 12-11, and tie in the fourth with 18 apiece.

Anessa Glenn would be the top scoring Thunderbird for this game with 14 points. Takara Wade had 12 points, Leah Goodman and Deja Dagons would both have 10 points in the game. Firing on all cylinders, the Thunderbirds headed down to Yuma to face the Matadors of Arizona Western College (AWC). AWC would give Mesa a run for their money and only win by two points.  Mesa would come out of the gates sluggish and only score 18 points in the first half. Coming out of halftime, MCC would finish strong and win the second half scoring. The game was either a great defensive battle or very sloppy. Turnovers, steals, and rebounds were the dominant stats for the game. Leah Goodman would be the only double-digit scorer for the Lady T-Birds. MCC has five more games before they cross paths with Cochise College for the final time. The playoffs begin on Mar. 6.
