The inspiring thing about art is that not only is it interesting to look at, but many times it serves as a good cause.MCC alumni Vickie Florschuetz uses her art to raise funds for a non-profit organization called The Bravery Project for domestic violence survivors.

Florschuetz learns survivors’ stories then paints a portrait of them.

Florschuetz graduated from MCC and ASU with a technical writing and multimedia arts degree.

Later on, she came back to MCC to study painting and drawing.

“I decided to do portraits on domestic violence survivors because it is something my husband and I both feel deeply for,” Florschuetz said.

“I’ve learned that there are so many different kinds of domestic violence since starting these portraits,” she continued.

Florschuetz’s art can be viewed during the month of September at Cup O’ Karma coffee shop, formally known as Into the Bean, on Southern and Dobson next to Cheba Hut.

There will be a special reception for the artists on Sept. 25 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cup O’ Karma with free dessert and house coffee.

The National Advocacy and Training Network, who work in partnership with the Bravery Project, is a network of survivors, advocates, and professionals working toward ending domestic violence, substance abuse, and sexual assault. NATN is also a nonprofit agency.

To learn more about these organizations, their websites are www.natn-az.com and www.braveryproject.org.

Cup O’ Karma provides job training for women overcoming domestic violence and substance abuse, as well.
