The Mesa Community College (MCC) Bachata social was created in late 2017 with the goal to help students to meet new friends in a safe and fun environment and to, well, learn how to dance bachata. Ashai Thomas is the president and creator of the Bachata Club. She said the club was created because there was nothing on campus that gave students the opportunity to have a dance class that they didn’t have to take as a course.  The club has two advisors, including Mariana Versal, an MCC dance instructor and Maria Martell, a Spanish professor on campus.
The club has members from a variety of age groups who participate in the bachata socials.

Thomas said the club isn’t limited to a particular group of students, it’s open to all ages and experience is not necessary either. “It gives students thing to do around campus,” Thomas said. The gatherings are free and the club meets at least one Friday per month. Mesa Community College Bachata Club has been invited to this huge event called Latin Soul. Local dance communities get together for a weekend they teach all the Latin dances and also perform during the weekend.  It’s a great experience for Mesa Community College. Each event is free and there is no charge to join the club.

At least once a month a social is held on campus at PE1W- Next to Theo Heap gym. “It’s a great way to keep people involved in a fun way and there are people who didn’t even know what bachata was and now they now,” Thomas said. You can find more information in regards to their upcoming events on every social media platform at Bachata MCC or Bachara Club MCC as well as email at Bachata.MCC@gmail.com and Mesacc.edu clubs page.
