Death’ runs for president

Death is running for President in MCC’s comedy, “Death by a Landslide,” opening October 19.”Death by a Landslide” is a political satire written by Emmy nominee Joel Martel, who worked with Michael Moore on “Fahrenheit 9/11”.

In the play, Death starts his candidacy after the president’s political strategist agrees to run Death’s campaign in exchange for his life.

The play tackles problems in modern politics from candidates being unable to pronounce the names of key world countries to incompetence, lies, unfaithful party members and wives.

Guest director Joe Martinez, from Arizona Broadway Theater, said that he wants his actors to deliver convincing and realistic performances even though the context is absurd.

Though many of the jokes revolve around Death and his candidacy, it’s the other candidates, pundits, and politicians that are satirically criticized.

When Martinez was asked which candidate in the play he would vote for, he replied he would probably pick Death, saying that the other candidates are really just “parodies of themselves.”

The play will run Oct. 9, 10, and 11 at 7:30p.m. and 2:30 on Sunday Oct. 12.
