MCC safety officers get guns

Nick Kosmider

After increasing pressure to come up with a districtwide firearm policy the Maricopa Community College District has now equipped its officers with guns.Certified officers at MCC began carrying firearms on campus on Jan. 14.

Many of the district’s certified officers recieved training and weapons qualification during the winter break through the Arizona Peace Officers Standards Training Board or AZPOST.

All Arizona law enforcement officers are trained and certified through AZPOST.
Last year Ernie Bakin was named District Director of Public Safety, a new position established by the MCCD Governing Board.

“In short, our certified officers are now better equipped to deal with campus emergencies of all kinds,” Bakin said in a district-wide e-mail.
