On March 5, the MCC creative writing faculty will present “New Words: A celebration of students and faculty.”The event will feature readings from winners of this year’s district-wide creative writing competition as well as faculty members Kate Mohler and Josh Rathkamp.

The event will be held in the Southwest Reading Room on the third floor of the MCC library from 12-1:30.

The competition which was open to all 10 district schools featured four categories: poetry, short-story fiction, essay, and playwriting.

MCC produced three winners in the competition.

Melissa Harker finished third place in the short-story fiction category for her story, “A Most Unusual Event.”

Harker’s story is about a depressed old man who experiences a whole new world when his artwork comes to life.

Andrew Gosse took first place in the essay competition for his piece, “Embracing the Sirens.”

Also receiving an award in the essay category was James Mungin who took third place for his essay, “Pac Jams in Miami.”

Mungin’s essay painted a picture of his time attending Pac Jams, a celebration in Miami featuring local artists, games, a parade, and food.

According to Rathkamp, the reading will be a part of a series of readings that will take place at MCC.

“We plan to bring in writers and have four literary readings a year,” Rathkamp said.

On April 9, Bob Wallace, an award-winning author for his book, “Flying With Scissors: A Different Perspective on Childhood Cancer,” will be reading in the Southwest Room on the third floor of the MCC library.

Wallace’s book depicts the heroic battles that children with cancer around the world fight against the disease everday.

The MCC creative writing curriculum has four classes for students to take to better their writing skills.

Intro to Creative Writing, Intro to Fiction, Intro to Poetry, and Intro to Screenwriting, are classes Rathkamp encourages students who want to learn more about writing to sign up in for next semester.
