Science building to be MCC’s most energy efficient

Mesa Community College’s newest addition will also be its most energy efficient. The 62,000 square foot Physical Science building, being constructed in the west region of MCC will boast not only the latest and greatest in science laboratories but also a 21,000 square foot planetarium.

The building, which is scheduled to be finished by fall 2008, uses solar power and is the first of its kind for MCC.

Although the new building is the first at MCC to utilize solar power, strides towards “going green” are popping up all over campus.

The recycling bins that have been placed in every classroom are a step towards becoming more environmentally conscience as is the school’s Environmental Action Club, a campus-based club aimed at increasing environmental awareness and providing education on keeping the environment healthy and clean.

Plans to update the heating and cooling systems throughout the several buildings are also underway to make MCC more energy efficient as a whole.

Braden Adamson, an MCC sophomore, feels that including solar power in the new Physical Science building is a strong step towards improving the earth.

“Using solar power at MCC is a good idea. Not only will it help conserve energy but it might raise awareness to students that the environment needs to be looked out for. It might get students asking ‘how can I help?’ and that’s always a good thing,” he said.

Mike Sims, the Department Chair of the Physical Science Department feels that it is the obligation of the science and engineering departments to make these strides towards “going green”.

“As a science department, when we have the opportunity, we’re obligated,” he said.

Sims also revealed that although construction of the new Physical Science building is more costly than constructing a regular building, long term its sustainability will make it more cost efficient.

Sims also noted that every step of the construction process is energy efficient.

The builders are even using recycled materials such as steel and installation in the actual construction of the building.

Additionally the newest addition to MCC is designed to maximize shading for solar power.

SRP has taken note of MCC goal of becoming more energy efficient and has even donated money towards the solar power system to power the planetarium.

Not only was constructing an energy efficient building important in deciding to erect the new Physical Science complex, but the students best interest were in mind.

Sims said, “Students were in mind, whether it’s in class or out of class. It should be a wonderful facility for students.
