The T-Birds volleyball team couldn’t handle the Arizona Western offense as the T-Birds lost the match 3-0.

The game wasn’t close from the start as the T-Birds struggled to gain ground in the first set as they dropped the set 25-14

The second set wasn’t any better as the T-Birds lost the second set 25-9 before dropping the third set 25-14.

Arizona Western is currently 8-2 in conference play this season with a 12-5 record overall.

The T-Birds, on the other hand, have yet to pick up a win this season.

Sophomores Hannah Marang and Tia Kannapel both had three kills in the match.

MacKinzie King also had two blocks in the defeat.

Team captain Shelby Murphy had some comments on the team’s performance so far.

“I would say that from the start of the season the confidence level has definitely improved.  We’ve continued to get better throughout the season and more and more competitive,” Murphy said.

She said consistency is still a big issue.

“Our biggest issue would be our inability to be consistent.  We prove throughout each match at moments that we can compete with every team, just not for a sustained amount of time,” Murphy said.

It’s hard to look at the positives this season but Murphy said there is still some light at the end of the tunnel.

“Some things are going right. We treat each loss as a learning experience and raise the bar of expectations for ourselves for the next time.  This fosters an environment of constant hard work and effort to improve.  We are working on consistency and it is improving,” Murphy said.

Murphy still believes that the season can end on a high note.

“In this second half I see us winning some conference games and ending on a good note for next year and the start of a new program at Mesa under the new head coach.

Our goal as always is to get those conference wins and beat some teams that we lost to at earlier points in the season, proving that we have improved and came together from a losing program,” Murphy said.

The T-Birds host Yavapai on October 15.
