The Lady T-Birds golf team closed out regular season tournament play with a victory at the South Mountain Invitational April 20-21.  This season the Lady T-Birds placed first in seven of its eight tournaments it played in. Charatta Thongbai lead the way for the Mesa Lady T-Birds with three first place finishes.  Jill Harvison came in second with two first place finishes this season for the Lady T-Birds. MCC swept the leader board in the Chandler Gilbert Community College Invite with all five players placing in the top five.  Next up for the Lady T-Birds is the NJCAA Division I National Championship that it will host May 12-15 at the Longbow Golf Course in Mesa..  “It means everything to be on Mesa Community’s golf team, I worked so hard throughout high school to be recruited,” said Brianna Medrano.  For Medrano the one thing that has made her stay focused is the encouragement from her family, swing coach, and cousins.  On the other side Sierra Myerscough feels that the main thing that has made her focus is the thought of winning it all.

“Competing is what I love to do and all year I kept thinking about Nationals, when I did not want to practice, I thought of how I wanted to do well at Nationals,” said Myerscough.  “Success to me would be achieving my goals, both on the golf course and in school,” said Medrano.  According to Myerscough success is when she is happy with the end results and reached her goals. “I would not say I am a perfectionist, but I do want to be the best that I can be,” said Myerscough.  Goals are extremely important to me because not only do they keep me on track but also are always in the back of my mind when I am slacking off.

After their win at the South Mountain Invitational MCC golf came back to some awards for their season.  The T-Birds won all seven tournaments in conference play this season.  Five of the Lady T-Birds won first team honors with Charatta Thongbai named Player of the Year.  Head coach John Guerrero was named Coach of the Year as well. Sierra Myerscough, Jill Harvison, Jacquelyn Porman, Brianna Medrano earned all-region honors.  On the other side the men’s golf team finished out regular season tournament play with a second place finish at the Paradise Valley Invitational.

This season the golf team had six-second place finishes and one first place finish.  The one first place finish came at the NJCAA Preview back on March 12-14 in Scottsboro, Alabama home of the NJCAA Division II National Championship.  Brandon Carlson and Bryce Melville from the MCC golf team tied for eighth place in the NJCAA Preview.  Austin Fletcher led the men’s golf team with five top ten finishes on the season.  The MCC men’s golf team play April 23-26 in the NJCAA Region I Championship and if they place first they will be off to the NJCAA Division II National Championship home of their only first place finish this season.  Beating South Mountain will not be an east task for the T-Birds as South Mountain has come out on top in all of the past tournaments this season.
