Dare to dress up this Halloween

Marissa Villarreal

The idea that Halloween is a time to dress up as anything we want leaves a lot to the imagination.

We are able to create the scariest of creatures with just a little make up or a horrifying mask.

But many of us girls do not wish to look like the scary ghouls of our nightmares; we opt for the cute cop or the naughty nurse. Why?

Because who doesn’t enjoy the flattering attention that a slutty black cat gets?

Although it hasn’t always been like this, at some point in history it was just as satisfying to be an ugly witch as it is to be a sexy little devil but that was before puberty and make up, when we were young and only in it for the trick or treating.

Just as society has evolved, so has our meaning of Halloween.

We’ve become more acceptable with nudity and sex, which of course Halloween costumes have perfectly adapted to.

Walk into any Halloween store and you are almost guaranteed to find those short schoolgirl skirts and even a reformed raunchy witch costume and lets not forget the guys. There is a variety of men’s costumes that are made up of crude humor such as a middle finger costume, an erected penis costume or my personal  favorite, the plug and outlet couples costume, which we all know what it  really implies. These ridiculous outfits have become the norm of Halloween because we allow it to be.

We’re a society that likes to roll with the punches. I say why not show a little skin or dabble in  some immature humor?

After all, with the explicit nature of sex, viloence,  and inappropriate humor around us in all sorts of media like magazines, movies, television shows, even the Internet, why not our holidays as well?

I say dress up and embrace your inner French maid babe, throw on those horrifyingly hoochie heels and go all out this Halloween.

For the many criticizing the bare skin and fishnet stockings, they can try to open their eyes before opening their mouths and see that this is a culture that surrounds us every day, through not only the media but society   as well, lets not pretend that it doesn’t.

Lets not pretend we do not create it ourselves.

Lets not turn our heads to the costumes that have become more scandalous and fun for the holiday.

I mean we can sit here and act like they are inappropriate and insulting but on the one day of the year where you can be anything you want to be, I do not believe it is either inappropriate or insulting to feel a little bit sexy.
