Educational boot camps offered by  Mesa Community College give students a way to catch up on studies over the winter break

Mesa Community College will offer their annual winter boot camps from Jan. 3 to Jan 11, 2023, aimed at helping students improve their abilities in individual college subjects.

The boot camps will be available in physics/astronomy, chemistry, computer science, math foundations, calculus and reading/writing, with registration closing for each on Jan. 2.

Each of the individual boot camps offer students an opportunity to prepare for success with the guidance of faculty and staff who offer the bootcamps in multiple different formats.

Students can easily access the boot camps at both MCC campuses and online for a hybrid mix of on campus attendance, or on your own time, work that will mimic much of what students are already familiar with.

The courses can help alleviate students’ anxiety for an upcoming test, or simply help them feel more prepared for a course in the spring semester.

“We provide opportunities for students to discover their potential, develop their confidence, and achieve success.,” read the mission statement of the MCC boot camps on their online webpage.

All of the boot camps are completely free to attend, but students need to register for the class online using their MEID.

Here’s an overview of each of the boot camp courses.

Reading and Writing – Jan 3 to Jan 4

The reading and writing boot camp will offer students the opportunity to feel more confident in their literacy skills, and will help reduce writing anxiety, according to the departments webpage. Students who want to improve their EdReady scores for placement and who are enrolled in a spring english course are encouraged to sign up for the boot camp

Physics and Astronomy – Jan 8 to  Jan 11

Students enrolling in AST11, AST112, PHY 101 or PHY 111 can review math concepts that would be regularly used in popular physics and astronomy courses, including the implementation of specific study strategies. Boot camp attendees would also participate in lab projects. While this boot camp is specific for students in the above classes, all are welcome to attend and fine tune their skills.

Chemistry – Jan 8 to Jan 11

The chemistry boot camps invite students who are enrolling in CHM130, CHM151, CHM152, CHM235, or CHM236. The chemistry boot camp is unique in that it offers three different levels of course competencies. Each of the chemistry bootcamps happen at different times.

Computer science – Jan 8 to Jan 11

The computer science boot camp provides students with an opportunity to understand how computers work, while introducing the design of algorithms and basic coding using Java and C++.

Math Foundations – Jan. 8 to Jan. 11

The math foundations boot camp helps students feel confident with solving problems that are regularly encountered in entry level math courses. The math boot camps are available in different formats to make it easy for students.

Calculus – Jan. 8 to Jan. 11

The calculus boot camp will be offered at both MCC colleges to help students with their existing knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry, while learning how to navigate the complicated worlds of calculus.
