Guilt-free chocolatey study session

Chocolate is not only rich in taste, but it’s great for studying. It contains high amounts of flavonoids which are similar to antioxidants and battle fatigue.

Cocoa beans, when fresh and pure, contain over 300 chemically identifiable compounds making it one of the most complex food substances on Earth.

“Chocolate contains a substance which may act as a stress reducer,” said Dr. Maureen Zimmerman, nutrition faculty at MCC.

Dark chocolate helps the brain increase its blood supply improving the process of thought and it intensifies a temporary state of mind or feeling by natural stimulant that raises the production of endorphins, improving focus and concentration.

According to a study presented by the British Physiology society, people who eat chocolate find mental challenges easier to complete.

“As a registered dietitian,” says Zimmerman, “my suggestions for studying effectively are:

“Get a good night of sleep most nights of the week. Eat a wide variety of non processed foods – mostly fruits, vegetables and unrefined carbohydrates – like whole grain breads, cereals, pastas.”

“Go to class, do all of your assignments, seek help from peers or your instructor if needed, and master effective and efficient study skills.”

She also stressed how much help students can get through campus services which are underutilized by students.

Zimmerman’s last piece of advice is to “enjoy a piece of dark chocolate now and then but chocolate alone is not going to improve your grades.”

For other quick studying boosts. Sunflower seeds and nuts contain thiamine which is a type of vitamin B that helps increase memory and cognitive skills.

These nuts boost brain energy and improve the mood  because they contain high amounts of vitamins and fatty acids.
