Mexican college student becomes hero

The Mexican state of Chihuahua used to consist of quiet farming communities. Areas much like in middle America; where people live not only off the land, but a moral code as well. Much has changed in a short time for Chihuahua. Now two rival drug gangs fight for control of the border state’s only highway.

Their ensuing violence for control, fueled by unrestrained greed, has led to the deaths of not just each other, but townspeople and law enforcers alike.

Thus enters 20-year-old Marisol Valles Garcia.

The age of 20 normally involves talks of college, getting a job and going to the movies.

Garcia has decided to break through the mold and attempt to make a gargantuan difference.

Mexican politicians and government officials are being killed one after another, yet Garcia, a criminology student, has accepted the position of police chief. Garcia hasn’t even finished earning her degree, but selflessly decided to do whatever she could to help the community.

The nearly 9,000 residents there didn’t want the job.Why would they?

Most people try to avoid the type of danger this job is asking for.

With little experience in life, let alone in running a police department, this is a huge task to take on.

Garcia has already decided to take a unique path as well. One many have called na’ve.

She will not carry any firearm, and instead of focusing on the municipalities weapon supply, she will center her attention on bringing back the values of the community she remembers growing up.

This is in light that her predecessor was gunned down in July of 2009, and there has been no one willing to take a chance until now.

Rather her technique works or not is inconsequential. What matters is the conviction, dedication, and bravery Garcia is demonstrating.
