One dead after community college police officer involved shooting

One person died after a Thursday morning shooting in Phoenix involving Maricopa County Community College police.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said emergency calls reported someone pointing a gun at passing vehicles near 48th and Van Buren Streets before a shooting involving a police officer occurred at around 11:16 a.m.

Two Maricopa County Community College police officers were the first to arrive at the scene, one of them fatally shooting the suspect who was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to DPS.

DPS said their Major Incident Division is handling an investigation of the shooting.

The shooting occurred one-mile away from GateWay Community College, one of 10 MCCCD campuses throughout the Valley.

“We are fully cooperating with the investigation,” said Heather Carter of Maricopa County Community College District in an email to employees.

The Maricopa County Community College police did not immediately respond to The Mesa Legend’s request for more information.
