Wasting valuable time with Maury and Jerry Springer

Ben Garcia

“You are NOT the father.” You might recognize this line from a particular day-time TV talk show. Talk shows with topics like family love triangles or deception to a spouse about your gender are the types of shows I like to call smut TV.

Smut TV topics center around a few basic principles, lying, too much sex, and cheating. Some would argue those as being core American values.

Some times I find myself watching these shows similar to the way you would stare at a car accident on the side of the road. Nonetheless, this is an admission of guilt. I do catch myself wasting hours of my life watching smut TV programming.

Consider the scenario. It’s the middle of the day, during this time TV programmers must figure no one wants to watch TV so they decide to put on the most garbage shows. Basically, what I’m trying to say is nothing worth watching is on TV during this time.

So little ol’ me is just innocently flipping through channels when I happen to catch three seconds of Maury and BAM!

That’s all it takes. Just three seconds and I’m hooked.

Three seconds gives me just enough time to read the shows topic usually found in the bottom left of the screen. Next thing I know I’m watching a show about a 19-year-old woman having 2 different guys DNA tested to find out which one of them is having their second child with her.

Smut TV really gives you an inside look at some sad problems within our society nowadays. I could never imagine myself being in the scenario of having to be on stage for an episode of Jerry Springer or Maury were the shows topic is a family love triangle or something along those lines. Nonetheless, smut TV still carries that grotesque appeal of a car accident, painful to watch yet disturbingly hard to turn away.

When it’s the middle of the day and I have nothing better to do I can usually count on numerous smut TV programming to fill the void.

Apparently many others can relate to me. Actually the successful career of smut TV hosts is proof that I’m not the only person that has a guilty pleasure.

While hard to admit for some, fact is I’m sure we’ve all watched our share of smut TV programming and enjoyed it.
