City of Mesa adds bus route to help Mesa Community College students

The city of Mesa established a free bus route for Mesa Community members called “Fiesta Buzz” for the first time in the area including the MCC Southern and Dobson campus, it started on October 24th.

The service will be operated by Valley Metro, connecting the Fiesta District, Asian District, and Mesa Riverview. The total travel time is approximately 25 minutes from start to finish.

“This is a free service that we’re launching today here in West Mesa that covers along Dobson and will take you down from Riverview to MCC campus and around the neighborhoods around there,” said Francisco Heredia, District 3 council member on the Valley Metro board of directors.

The bus route runs from the former Fiesta Mall to Mesa Riverview, with popular destination points including: Sloan Park, Mekong Plaza, Banner Desert Hospital and the MCC Southern and Dobson campus.

“Currently the fiesta buzz when we start out it will be a free service and so it’s free to the raiding public, you’re able to connect back to light rail and bus and travel all around the community into the several different districts that the bus actually operates zone,” said Jessica Mefford Miller, Valley Metro CEO.

The Bus route is available Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to midnight, and Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The bus route is 25 minutes from the start to the finish point.

“Students and families and whoever wants to go to our destinations here in West Mesa can use it for free Monday through Saturday,” said Heredia.

The route has flag zones, meaning passengers can flag the bus to stop in some areas off the main route, which makes the new bus route useful for MCC students who live in neighborhoods next to the route.

“I think it is gonna be a great option for students because it is gonna connect you with a lot of the businesses and some of the attractions in Mesa,” said Miller.

The first buses on the new “Fiesta Buzz” route began on Oct. 24 at 7:30 a.m. at an event in Riverview Park with  Heredia and Jessica Mefford Miller in attendance.
