Thunderbird golf teams near end of regular season

The men’s and women’s golf teams of Mesa Community College near the close of their regular seasons with postseason play slated to begin at the end of April.

Women’s

The Thunderbird’s most recent contest was a come from behind victory at the South Mountain Invitational from April 2-3 at Cave Creek Golf Club in Phoenix.

Sophomore Alyzzah Vakasiuola won her fourth title of the year, adding to her championships from the Pima Invitational, Estrella Mountain Classic, and the Thunderbird Invitational.

MCC finished the first round at 347 strokes, one behind first place Chandler Gilbert Community College.

The Thunderbirds fared much better in the second round, finishing with 323 strokes and winning the invitational by eight strokes.

Freshman Addison King finished in seventh place, scoring 84 on day one and 79 on day two to finish at 163.

King’s best finish came during the Paradise Valley Classic from Feb. 25-26, when she tied with sophomore Taylor Crowder from Paradise Valley Community College as runners-up to sophomore Angelina Borg-Malec from South Mountain Community College.

Sophomore Raquel Pargas finished in ninth, going 89-86 – 175, and sophomore Mary Tukuafu went 99-90 – 189.

The women’s team will compete again at the Lady Coyote Invite at Chandler Gilbert Community College on April 14-15.

Men’s

The men’s team most recently competed at the Eastern Arizona Classic from April 8-9, where the Thunderbirds finished in seventh place.

The team shot 312 on both days, finishing with a 624 stroke count over the two day event.

Sophomore Stratton Deneke finished tied for 17th after a 76-76 – 152 performance. 

Sophomore Ethan Lovatt and freshman Levi Stone brink finished tied for 28th and 30th place, respectively.

The Thunderbird’s best performance came in the season opener at home in the Thunderbird Classic in February, where the team finished in third place.

Deneke led the way with a 72-72– 144 split, tying for eleventh place.

The men’s team will compete again at regionals on April 22-25 at Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler.
