ASU football player drops pigskin for microphone

Allison Palmer

Throwing a football, strumming a guitar, and pursuing religious education can seem like three very different tracks in life but Samson Szakacsy seamlessly combines them all. Throughout his childhood, his father was always involved in music, whether it was strumming a guitar or recording in the house. So, it’s no wonder that music is second nature to Szakacsy.

Szakacsy, a native from Ventura, Calif., has recently started a project called “Chasing Truth.”

“Chasing Truth” is something that was never supposed to be released, but with a little encouragement from his friends, this two-year project is finally coming together.

“It’s a journal of my feelings that I started to reflect on. Life in general, being here, being in this world is my influence. So many experiences have influenced me.

“Expressing that brings me joy. Music brings people together and it’s awesome to see that.”

Szakacsy signed with Arizona State University football in 2007 and played quarterback 2011. He has resided in Arizona ever since.

Szakacsy will be graduating from ASU in May with a degree in religious studies.

Although Szakacsy has one more year of eligibility to play football, he said he didn’t really have to make a decision, he knew he needed to be creating music.

Although the new CD is very spiritual, Szakacsy said he could not identify with just one religion.

“I believe in love, the most valuable understanding is God is in our heart. My religion takes place internally. I work on myself as a person so I can be myself, the best I can be.

“We’re all divine in nature. Finding God in myself and bring that out is where I stand at the moment. Love is the right way.”

For the moment, promoting his new CD, “Chasing Truth,” is Szakacsy’s main goal.

He had his first performance/release party for “Chasing Truth” in his hometown of Ventura in early January.

On Feb. 18, Szakacsy had his first performance in Tempe with more than 200 in attendance.

If Szakacsy could tell his listeners one thing, “I want them to know that (music making) really is my way of reflecting on my journey to discover myself fully.

I think if they’re listening it could help them to discover their journey and find their answers and find themselves. We’re all into this together.”
