BB bandits blowout sub-shop window, $5,000 reward

Random vandalism or real cause for concern?

The Jimmy John’s across the street from MCC has been the target of two drive by shootings with BB guns that have damaged the store’s south side windows in the past few weeks and has some employees angry and confused.

“This is really frustrating. It’s the second time it’s happened and it’s just wasting people’s time and money. It’s just dumb,” said one employee.

Co-owner of the store Jared Vacus believes that the shootings are connected.

“I’m very certain whoever did the first one also did the second one but I think it’s just some high school kids causing trouble,” he said.

No one was injured in the shootings and BB pellets were found outside the windows by the Mesa Police after the shootings occurred.

According to workers at the store, the first shooting occurred at roughly 9 p.m on Aug. 23, and the second at roughly the same time on Sept. 5, which was only 2 days after the store had the windows repaired from the first shooting. Although employees are concerned about the incident, some customers aren’t.

“I guess as long it happens while no ones here it doesn’t really affect us,” said one customer.

Jimmy John’s only opened its doors for business over the summer but sits as direct competition to a local favorite of students Cheba Hut and Subway, who lie only within a few hundred feet of each other.

Some students at MCC think the BB shootings are part of the territory of moving a business into the Fiesta district.

“This is already a bad neighborhood,” said customer Nathan Saunders.

The store has posted a $5,000 reward for anyone who has information leading to the arrest of the people involved.

The car used was a white Cadillac with a navy blue top.
