Regular exercise is a good way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but improper exercise safety can lead to an injury. Many may not know of simple procedures are important, such as wearing the proper shoes, always having a partner, staying hydrated and not rushing during exercise as safety devices, but they are.

Although some people are familiar within the gym, it is a frightening place for others to go, especially with no proper training on how to utilize the equipment, or how to get the most out of a daily jog, it can be discouraging.

However, joining a gym can have its benefits, like personal trainers and medical staff on hand in case of injury while exercising.

“Whenever exercising it is best to have a partner along to help out with spotting and such,” said personal trainer Craig Hickey. “Also it can be a morale booster to have someone for support.”

When bench pressing, it is good to have a spotter if lifting free weights just in case the load is too heavy or fatigue kicks in during exercise.

For example, Stephon Johnson of USC dropped 275 pounds on his throat, while bench pressing.

There was said to be a team trainer assisting Johnson, but his hand slipped and the bar slammed on his throat at an angle, forcing him to be rushed into emergency surgery.

This simple accident could have been avoided with just a few careful steps, and although a person may be strong, exercise is not something that can be taken lightly.

Athletic shoes and gloves should be worn to prevent slipping, also use back protection as much as possible while lifting weights.

Hickey also mentioned that one of the keys to staying safe is having the proper hydration during activities.
