Movies are big business, that is no secret and for those who enjoy seeing movies in The Valley, there is no shortage of establishments to go see them. Harkins and AMC both have multiple theaters throughout the state.

FilmBar, however, offers a bit of a different experience for moviegoers. Located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, FilmBar is exactly what it sounds like; a bar that just so happens to show movies as well.

“They have a great selection of movies. No matter what kind of movies you like. The environment is great. If you like to drink, it’s an added bonus. There isn’t really a reason why you shouldn’t go,” said ASU student and move lover Michael Robert Compian.

Compian said that he’s been going to FilmBar for a few years and has seen quite a few movies there and likes some of the more unique aspects of the establishment.

“I like that they show older movies and indie movies. Also, they serve alcohol,” Compian said.

FilmBar’s owner, Kelly Aubey, made sure that people don’t have to come and see a movie in order to be able to enjoy a drink at the bar, in fact, that is absolutely encouraged.

Compian also recently went to see “Beetlejuice”, which was part of FilmBar’s My Favorite Monster October Film Series, which showcases both new and old horror movie favorites in honor of Halloween such as “American Psycho”, “Gremlins” and naturally, “Halloween.”

In terms of price, FilmBar doesn’t charge a premium to enjoy the experience. Regular tickets are priced at $9 each, as compared to Harkins which charges $9.50 for a regular adult ticket. FilmBar also has specials on Monday-Wednesday where customers can get a ticket, popcorn and their choice of beer or wine for $12.

FilmBar’s website recommends buying tickets to showings online in advance because the theater only seats 70, which is a mix of more traditional seating and high top tables in the back where movie goers can enjoy their drinks and are welcomed to bring in their own snacks as well.

FilmBar is open Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are available online or on site. The My Favorite Monster October Film Series will be continuing now through Halloween.
