The Thunderbird golfers are made up of about a dozen MCC student athletes, are working hard to ensure they have a successful year. “The number one goal is to win the national title,” said Andrew Augustyniak, a 20-year-old returning player.
“The team has had a whole summer to play with each other, now everyone has opened up,” he added.
The golfers plan on performing to the best of their ability both on and off the field, achieving success in more than one way.
There is a lot of preparation and strenuous activity circulating through the student athletes in this club in anticipation of this brand new season.
During the offseason, the team has been conducting meetings and practice is vital to the success of the squad.
“We’re warming up right now getting back in shape because we’ll be signing to universities next winter,” said 18-year-old freshman golfer Monique Breault.
The women’s team has already taken first place at the first invitational this season with Monique Breault taking second place overall and teammate Nikki Picallo placing third respectively.
“Coming to MCC from a winning high school program I’m already used to winning,” Picallo said.
Coach John Guerrero said his number one priority for each individual golfer is for them to maintain a respectable grade point average.
In fact, Guerrero said there is a 90 percent correlation between a high GPA and performing well as a golfer.
Academic success is important, not only to coach Guerrero, but to the whole community as well.
He uses school standards as a recruiting tool to gather and attract the youth to this college in hopes of making a golfing commitment at MCC.
Guerrero is a down to earth serious person who happens to coach golfing. He also emphasizes motivation with his nifty recruiting strategy.
“I recruit the players that want to have fun which is a fundamental aspect to my team’s daily mentality and attitude,” he added.
