Massacre at Riggs Stadium

MCC Thunderbirds suffer their first loss in the first game of the season, in dramatic fashion to the Artichokes of SCC. This was a rival game with passion, and heart filled emotion. It set the stage for an ultimate showdown. MCC came out with an exciting entrance followed by the mascot, and cheerleaders in flower painted VW Bugs sponsored by MEB. The game started off with SCC going three and out, then punting to MCC who put up a quick three points to give the T-birds a 3-0 lead. Not wasting anytime SCC seized the next opportunity. Warren Johnson, #8 of the Artichokes, returned a punt of 50 yards for a touchdown to give them a 7-3 lead early in the first quarter.

MCC strung together a few good drives mostly led by #21 Aaron Hardwick and #28 Jarison Johnson. Together they ran 20 yards, or more.

Unfortunately, most of the success of the offense was halted by penalties, turnovers for points, and special teams for the most part.

MCC had seven possessions and got only a single field goal.

When the third quarter started much of the fire and intensity that existed on the MCC sidelines was lost. “It’s time to hit the club” one player was quoted as saying, in reference to the game already being over with two quarters still left to play.

It was a anything but close battle with SCC coming out on top 57-3. It’s a season opener that everyone would like to forget, except the Artichokes.

“Definitely wasn’t what we planned on, you can’t make penalties, you can’t make turnovers, if you do you beat yourself,” said Coach Carl Hargrave after the game.
