MCC musicians perform well in districtwide competition

An annual districtwide music competition was held at Scottsdale and Glendale Community Colleges on March 27. The competition was made up of soloists, small ensembles, vocals, instrumentals and music theater.

MCC was well represented with approximately 50 music majors participating.

MCC had multiple winners and honorable mentions.

Winners for female classical vocal were Wendy McWilliams, who was given second place, and third place was awarded to Emily Kay.

Third place for the male classical vocal was awarded to Travis White.

Musical Theater in the female bracket was won by Halli Sturm, Cassie Chilton won third, and Emily Kaye was awarded honorable mention.

Ryan Tang won second place in the male musical theater category and Sean Meshew and Chase Peacock were both given honorable mentions.

MCC took every prize in the instrumental solo category. Piper Denny took first, Charlene Robinson second, Mollt Tsai third and honorable mention was given to Mercedes Murrieta.

Musicians Lillard, Bartschi, Sporrer and Biczo made up a trombone quartet and was awarded first place in the chamber ensemble category. Third place went to clarinet ensemble whose members were Miller, Paslay, Gaunt and Rose.

Winners of this year’s competition will perform in the Artist of Promise show on April 30 at the Herberger Theater.

“This is a huge honor for the students to perform at this show,” said Pam Schuler, from the music department.

The art show starts at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m.

Winners will be rewarded that night. The night will consist of choreography, music, photography and creative writing.
