Self-defense knowledge prior to an attack is the most important way to be protected. Most attendants in self-defense classes have already either been stalked or attacked.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and Arizona Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Program will be putting on a number of events in Phoenix and Tucson.

The program also has an operation of hotlines and training education seminars.
On April 16 ASU will be hosting “Take Back the Night” from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Tempe campus.

This event gives the audience the opportunity to hear true stories that can help to raise awareness about attacks and self-defense, as well as to help victims cope.

Lyndsi Johnson a health, fitness, and wellness consultant has had quite a bit of experience with self-defense.

Johnson has taken Thai Chi for many years and has picked up some helpful hints along the way.

“Be aware of your surroundings constantly surveying the area you are in and the area you are moving toward,” Johnson said.

A lot of people believe they will be safer if they carry some sort of protection but Johnson advises against just anyone carrying a weapon.

If there is a lack of proper training with the weapon the attacker can use it to their advantage and further dominate the situation, said Johnson.

College-goers and women between the ages 16 to 24 are the most frequent victims of attackers.

According to the statistics, the most dangerous times to be out are between the hours of 1 to 7 a.m.

According to Johnson, safety always varies on the location.

“Always use the buddy system,” she said.
She said proper planning is a key to staying safe.

“Someone should always know where you are, where you’re going and when you plan to arrive.”

Many community colleges and gyms offer self defense classes.

MCC has three self-defense classes available for the upcoming fall semester.
