New sports info director seeks to improve program

MCC welcomes Wayne Block, an experienced sports information director  who has spent 29 years in the field.

Block has worked in many levels of scholastic sports information, from his first job at Rensselaer Polytechnic, working in the big time at Division 1A Virginia Tech for four years.

“I’ve spent almost my whole career working in small schools,” Block said.

For the previous five years, the Mesa Community College athletic department had relied on sports information director, Todd Bolser

“Todd put his heart and soul into it,” said volleyball coach Brent Martindale

“He worked longer hours and went above and beyond his job. We are going to miss Todd but I’d imagine Wayne knows what he’s doing,” he said.

“He seems able, capable and experienced,” said Martindale, which Block definitely is after having spent the last 29 years involved in the sports information field.

From there it was 22 years at CNU, before retiring and taking on the SID post at Maricopa High School.

The small MHS athletic program could not quench Block’s thirst for sports, so he started actively looking for a college to take on the SID post for.

“I sent out emails to almost every college in Maricopa County,” said Block.

Block has big plans to spruce up the athletics department website, hoping to have an update for every athletic event MCC participates in, and he also plans to bring Mesa athletics to the social media world by starting the Mesa Thunderbirds Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Block is also going to create individual media guides for every athletic program here at MCC.

“I’m most excited about the media guides,” said MCC soccer coach Andrew Guarneri
