Raising awareness helps student voters to decide

Students on campus had the opportunity to become aware of the importance of voting.

Lining the sidewalks in front of the clock tower, student club members reached out to their peers from behind their booths in hopes of persuading others to join and promote their causes.

One club, the Young Americans for Liberty, is a national, non-profit, group that just started a new chapter at MCC this semester.

“We are a non-partisan organization that educates students in concepts of liberty,” YAL club member Franky Gonzalez said.

“We want to get the word out about the democratic process.”

The YAL believes that students should vote for whom they personally believe is qualified to run the country, not simply because of which party they represent.

“Voting for candidates based solely on party affiliation is even worse than not voting at all,” said member Jared Howell.

Student Kathleen Murrieta agrees, “I don’t like when people vote for one candidate simply because they don’t want the other candidate running against him to win,” said Murrieta.

“Voting is important because it determines our future, so don’t vote if you just want the president out of office, vote because you truly believe in the person you are voting for.”

Along with various political clubs spreading awareness about voting, there were also organizations helping students register to vote for the upcoming presidential election.

The group Promise Arizona in Action is a volunteer-run organization, and they were one of the groups that helped students register to vote on campus, last week.

“We target young voters, ages 25-30 years old, because they are less likely to participate at the polls.” said member Lucy
