T-Birds baseball improved their conference record to 5-3 with a two game sweep over Yavapai College on Feb. 25.

Mesa’s overall record is now 15-4 and they sit in fourth place in the conference.

In game one against Yavapai, sophomore John Havird started for Mesa.

Havird threw seven innings and allowed one run off four hits and walked five batters in a complete game.

Havird also earned his third win of the season and has not lost a start this year.

“I just rely on my defense and if they get a hit, I just trust in my guys that they’ll roll one out for a double play,” Havird said.

The T-Birds bats showed up as they got 11 hits and scored seven runs that were jumpstarted by sophomore outfielder Cole Loncar’s solo home run the bottom of the fourth inning.

“I was seeing the ball really well today coming out of his (Yavapai starter Stephen Carabajal) hand,” Loncar said.

Sophomore Dillon Fahr went two for three scoring one run and had two RBI.

Sophomore Drew Lacaomb also went two for three and scored one run with an RBI.

The T-Birds were tied  going into the bottom of the sixth, but good plate discipline led to a six run inning to take a 7-1 lead and never looked back.

Game two was more competitive as Mesa had to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take an 8-7 lead for the win.

Freshman shortstop Jordan Zimmerman provided some offense as he scored two runs and drove in three RBI.

Loncar added one run and two RBI and reached base four times.

Mesa’s next home game is at 3 p.m. on March 4 versus Chandler-Gilbert.
