Voters usher in changing of the guard with Dana Saar

Joseph Starkloff

On Nov. 2, Dana Saar won the Maricopa Board member election for District 2 against runner-up Jerry Walker.Walker, a board member of 6 years, said he felt relieve after the campaign came to an end.

“I think it was divine intervention,” Walker said. “I’m still active with my (project) trying to get veterans coming home from war to go to college. I don’t have to be a member of the board to do that.”

Saar said he will be cleaning up after the campaign while signing papers, and getting to know the district thoroughly.

“I take office on or about January 1, so I’m going to be busy for the next couple months acquainting myself with the procedures and policies of the district,” Saar said. “It’s really going to be an orientation for the next couple months.”

Saar stated his relief at winning the election.

“It’s nice to be a winner. It’s something that myself and many others have worked on for over a year and finally it’s come to a successful conclusion,” Saar said.

Walker said that he still believes he would have been the best choice as a board member.

“(The board) won’t have a real conservative member anymore; I was the conservative voice on that board,” Walker said.

Saar said that he is prepared for the responsibilities as a board member because of his previous experience.

“I’ve been on a school board for 14 years. Obviously, this is a bigger entity then the Fountain Hills board, but the day to day requirements as a board member are very similar, so I’m ready,” Saar said.

Saar is prepared to take time to understand the plans that the district has before he makes plans of his own.

“There are probably things I don’t even know yet that ill address, but if I had to point my finger somewhere; just to make sure that the plan the district has for the future is established whether it’s in facilities, or whether it’s in classroom instruction,” Saar said.

Saar will spend time picking up campaign signs, and getting ready for his upcoming job as a new board member of District 2.

“I’m looking forward to working with (fellow board members)
