Mesa Community College fashion program showcases student designs on the runway
Mesa Community College hosted the Future of Fashion event on April 25 that showcased over 100 original designs by MCC Fashion Program students.
The event took place in MCC’s Navajo Room in its Southern and Dobson campus with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
This annual show brings out the creative and artistic talents these passionate students have for fashion. The fashion show production class along with student volunteers from the program’s merchandising classes are showcasing their skills behind the scenes, providing valuable work experience for those planning for careers off the runway.
“Our students are so creative, we give them the guidance and the free liberties to be able to create their own designs, and we give them a theme every year for the fashion show,” said MCC Fashion Design Occupational Program Director, Kimberly Broxham.
Broxham explains that the students work on a theme based on whatever is trending for the season and put together a cohesive piece and collection for the show.
Broxham stated through an MCC press release that the students’ enthusiasm and drive is what gives this program its energy and the fashion show showcases the student’s creative talents, pattern-making and sewing skills.
The program has offered many opportunities to showcase student designs such as the Future of Fashion runway event presented by the Mesa Chamber of Commerce at Superstition Springs Mall on April 20.
MCC set up the event outside the indoor mall entrance of JCPenny, where students displayed original work, as well as set up mannequins featuring many designs.
“We have the different categories, so we always have wearable art and sustainable fashion, and then we have all of our sewing classes combined, and then the graduates under the design studio that we brought back, and then it just showcases all the students’ work throughout the four semesters or two years that they’re here,” stated Broxham.
