Julio Cesar Chavez, who is considered an icon in boxing history, has opened Champeones, a Mexican restaurant located near Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue in Mesa.
Champeones, a boxing-themed restaurant featuring arcade games, kid’s area, sports bar, boxing museum, and a boxing ring placed in the center of the restaurant, celebrated its grand opening Nov. 10.
The restaurant can also be used for special events and has a capacity of 1,700 people.
Chavez and his family participated in the grand opening where he thanked the Hispanic community for all their support. He also expressed how happy he was about his first restaurant and thanked everyone who was involved in the project.
As part of the grand opening entertainment, a Mexican band played during the event and a small fight by two local boxers took place.
When Chavez was asked why he chose Arizona for his restaurant, he said, “I picked Mesa because even though I (lost) the only two fights I did in Arizona, I always got … much support and (acceptance from the people).”
He also said that Mesa is a perfect market for launching his new Champeones.
