Breaking the bank

With the economy getting worse, students are suffering. Their jobs, pay and hours just aren’t cutting it anymore.

It has become increasingly harder to bring in money.

School is becoming much more expensive because of tuition increases.

“I’m trying to cut down on going out to eat, but it’s hard for me because going out to eat is my weakness,” said 22-year-old ASU senior Ginny Corsbie.

On the other hand, there are many students who are trying to save every penny they can.

“After I get off work, I go to the bank and deposit all my cash into my account because if I have cash on me then I’ll spend it, but I won’t even think about swiping my card,” said MCC student Jessi Gabaldon.

The economy is affecting everyone and students have to make many changes in their lives to accommodate.

“I have to work extra hard and double the hours just to make the same amount of money I was making before the economy crashed,” Gabaldon said.

“I have to work extra hard and double the hours just to make the same amount of money I was making before the economy crashed,” Gabaldon said.

“I’m a waiter and at work I have to work extra hard to try and please my customers just so I can get a little more of a tip because that’s my income. With the economy being so bad it’s just not the same that it used to be,” said MCC student Jason Mendez.

Besides putting in extra hours at work, students are going the extra mile and changing their social lives as well.

“Although I still go out and eat out, I try to go to happy hour for better prices,” Corsbie said.

Students like Mendez and Gabaldon have completely put an end to their eating out.

“I don’t even go out to eat now. I shop at places like Fry’s for groceries for food because they seem to have the best prices,” Mendez said.

“I shop at Costco in bulk so that I get more food for cheaper prices. I also don’t go to the movies anymore. My Friday night consists of work and renting a movie. It’s a lot cheaper,” Gabaldon said.

Another great way to spend a Friday night is staying home and making a home cooked pizza.

Places like Fry’s and Safeway sell kits to make a personal pizza and it’s cheaper than going out and buying one for $20.

There are many different ways students can save money by changing some of their spending habits.

More and more students are finding every way to do that. It seems weekends for students are consisting of working and saving money instead of going out and spending it at restaurants or bars.

School is getting expensive, as well, with tuition increasing.

There is still time to apply for scholarships for next fall. It’s just a matter of finding the right scholarships to apply for and meeting the deadline and criteria for each.
