The Mesa golf team participated in the Scottsdale Invitational on March 1-2 at Hillcrest Golf Course in Sun City.
A tough first day for Mesa put them in a distant tie for third place, 23 strokes out of first place.
At the start of the second round, Ryan Mahoney, who shot a team best 73 on the opening day, made it clear that the first round totals were disappointing.
“So far we aren’t off to a great start. We have a lot of skilled golfers on this team; it’s just a matter of getting everyone to put it together at the same time. We will battle back though,” Mahoney said.
Mesa definitely bounced back on the second day. The entire team posted a number of strong scores.
Mesa freshman Kevin Witte led pack, shooting the low round of the day with a 69.
Kevin Witte finished the tournament at even par, with scores of 75 and 69 to lead all Mesa golfers.
Ryan Mahoney finished at five over, posting scores of 73 and 76.
Eddie Delashmutt rounded out the top three golfers for Mesa shooting a 76 and a 74 to finish at six over.
Mesa’s Gavin Kwon rebounded from an opening round 83 to post an even par 72. Kwon finished the tournament at 11 over, tied for 27th place.
Leo Maes III and Mike DeAngelo also participated for Mesa and shot 22 and 20 over respectively.
Despite losing the tournament by a total of 25 strokes to Scottsdale CC, Mesa showed great potential in the second round, posting a score only three strokes off of the low for the day.
Mesa looks to build on their success in the Postom Butte Classic on March 10 and 11 in Florence, AZ.
