Ladies golf is unstoppable

The Mesa Community College ladies golf team once again played their best golf as they finished first in the Lady Thunderbird Classic at Dobson Ranch.

The lady T-Birds played well on both days of the tournament, out-scoring their opponents by 48 strokes on the first day, knocking in 317 as a team while the next closest team scored 365.

On the second day, the lady T-Birds improved on an already great first day by shooting a 308, for a two day total of 625.

“That is the lowest team total since I have been at Mesa,” said Mesa coach John Guerrero.

The lady T-Birds took the top four spots, led by Ashlynn Hall, who shot a 79 on the first day and a 74 on the second day for a 153 total.

Jamie Jaruvangsanti shot a 79 on the first day and a 76 on the second day for a total of 155.

Third and Fourth place were won by Alexandra Haun and Mary Driscol, Haun shooting a total of 158 and Driscol shooting a 159 total.

“Depth is the difference with this team,” said coach Guerrero “we easily have the top five girls in the region.”

Even with another tournament win, which is their sixth first place finish this year, coach Guerrero’s main focus right now is getting these ladies prepared both physically and mentally for the national tournament.

“All the regions are combined for nationals so the competition is going to be a lot tougher, so it is my job to get them prepared for what is going to happen.”

Coach Guerrero knows a thing or two about preparing teams for success.

Since his hire in 2001, Guerrero has been named Coach of the Year by the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference four times.

He has built the Mesa ladies golf team into a powerhouse that many Division I and II schools look to for their next top recruit.

“When I can send a player to a four year school, that is the greatest feeling for me as a coach.” Guerrero said.

Mesa will be sending five girls to nationals this year.

As a team, they are ranked seventh nationally.

The lady T-Birds will play in one more region tournament on April 22-23 at the Hillcrest Golf Course in Sun City, Ariz. then it is off to nationals on May 12-17 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
