Learning to spell with song and dance

This spring the MCC music department will be putting on the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. From cast member Joel Duke is saying, it’s going to be a good show.

“This musical is about the 25th annual Putnam county spelling bee with the contestants that are probably as weird as kids who compete in spelling bees are, a host that loves the spot light a little too much, and a vice principal that doesn’t care…oh yeah, and some great singing and hilarious scenes.”

The cast has spent four weeks of nine hours of work a week to memorizing lines, songs, and choreography.

Duke, for one has some trouble getting into character.

“For me personally, Vice Principal Douglas Panch is the opposite of who I am. I am a special ed. major and love kids, but Panch, not so much. It’s been fun diving into a life of not caring about kids,” Duke said.

The show will be open for two weekends starting Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Piper Theater.

Shows will also be on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and two shows on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
