Community focus a part of college life

Some MCCD students are saying they want to see changes at the community college to help make it more “university like” with more activities and student interaction.C.J. Crowley, 19, physical education major at MCC, finds the classes he is taking fun but crazy.

Crowley is taking mostly prerequisite classes and finds them harder to focus on.

Crowley stays in touch with college life. He is a member of the bowling team and visits the workout room often.

“In a community college, students get in and get out, without getting involved in clubs or going out and meeting new people,” he said.

Kayla Hill, psychology major at CGCC, loves the classes she is taking.

“I have great teachers, great peers and a fair workload,” Hill said.

After one semester, she finds it hard to focus on classes that she is forced to take.

“Classes would be easier if there were more fun people involved … and an enthusiastic teacher; someone who’s not afraid to be weird, but can make the class fun but still a learning experience.”

Hill said the younger students at CGCC seem to be stuck in their high school ways by trying to find their “clique.”

“University students are way chill and more relaxed,” she said. “I think community college students should make the most out of the campuses; get involved, make friends, form clubs. They need to stop complaining about the lack of interaction and get out there and make a name for themselves.”

Hill said she would like to see a medical club offered that would help her in both psychology and therapy training.

She is involved in dance and choir and said these programs should be kept around because they, “(keep) students interacted, learning, and (offer) new challenges, while keeping the class fun.”

She was surprised to learn that CGCC doesn’t offer a football program.

“Everyone loves football, whether they understand the game or not. Who doesn’t love hot, muscular men, running around a field catching and throwing a football around?” she said.

Cody Weldon of MCC said that he would like to see more media classes, and have more classes offered in the afternoon.

Sadie Pierson of MCC wants a class on rehabilitation, and a class on becomeing a therapist or counselor. She would like to see more involvement in classes with the students, through group activities and maybe optional field trips.
