May 5th more than just Cinco de Drinko

Arriba! The Cinco de Mayo experience has multiple events going on around the Valley. The partying starts on May 1 and there is no need to wait until Tuesday to begin celebrating. Although it’s not, as commonly thought, Mexico’s independence day, Cinco de Mayo is the perfect time to celebrate cultures and traditions and honor Arizona’s Mexican heritage.

To start the weekend off, the Chandler Library Plaza will be hosting Chihuahua races. The event takes place May 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., admission into the plaza is free, and will have multiple vendors set up with plenty of authentic Mexican food. Drinks will be served throughout the day, but the Beer Garden will be open from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m.

“I’m taking my mom’s dog to the Chihuahua races, but just so it gives me an excuse to go to the beer garden,” said MCC student Nick Williams.

To get in a good laugh, head to Casino Arizona on May 5 for the Cinco de Mayo Comedy Fiesta. The fiesta will feature comedians from RENO 911!, MADtv and Everybody Loves Raymond. Chris Reid, from the ’90s band Kid N Play will also be there.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster. “I heard of the Comedy Fiesta and I really want to go,” said MCC student Gabriel Bustamante.

To celebrate the amazing Mexican food we have in the Valley, stop by Salty Senoritas sixth Annual Senoritaville Cinco de Mayo event. It will start at 4 p.m. and end at 2 a.m. Every fifth of the month at the Mesa, Peoria and both Scottsdale locations, Salty’s hosts “Cinco De Drinko” and offers happy hour all day long.

Flicka’s Baja Cantina will offer the atmosphere of Rocky Point while hosting a Cinco de Drinko event on May 5. If drinking rather than eating sounds like a good idea, the drinking starts at 5 p.m. The party will be bumping with multiple DJ’s.

For a calmer celebration, head down to Tucson early Saturday morning for the 29 annual 10K walk/run.

The 10K winds through the mountains with great views of the Tucson basin.

After the race, there will be burritos served from El Saquaritos Mexican restaurant, mariachi music, raffle prizes and much more.

Just make sure to enjoy the celebration. Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
