The completion of the construction to the LA, EF and EO buildings have received a new deadline of Oct. 15.The remodeling was initially expected to take five weeks, and be finished before the start of the fall semester.

Jesus Rivas, an MCC student who is attending a class in one of the buildings that are under construction, stated that its current condition has caused him problems.

“I can’t concentrate. I wish the school would have moved the classes to another building because sitting in this heat for almost two months . sucks,” Rivas said.

Shouan Pan, president of MCC, stated that he was aware of such issues, but that the school was unable to move certain class during the busy 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. time period due to a lack of available space.

He also expressed his disappointment with the progress of the remodeling, but stated that district was in charge of construction contracts.

“We were given promises (that) it would be done in three weeks (after the initial finish date), but all those deadlines where not realized. So clearly there were several promises that were broken,” Pan said.

He attributed the failure to finish on time due to a lack of communication.

“I personally believe that the construction company and the subcontractors . were clearly lacking (in coordination).”

He also stated that some of the delays were due to the nature of the remodeling process.

“As they move along they find something that can’t be done the way originally thought, so there are work order changes . We had quite a bit change, (and) when change happens it delays everything,” Pan said.
