Mesa Community College club rush promotes student run organizations

Mesa Community College will hold Safari Club Rush on January 30 and 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the clocktower on the Southern and Dobson campus, and February 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Red Mountain campus, as an opportunity for students to engage with student run clubs.

The event was hosted by the Student Life department at the beginning of each semester as a way for students to explore different clubs on campus and find ways to make connections with other students.

There will be a multitude of clubs out tabling as well as campus resources students can utilize for success throughout the semester. The Student Life department also partnered with the Center for Community and Civic Engagement this semester.

“It’s kind of so our students will check out each club to see what they’re interested in and sign up or even start new clubs if they can’t find one that they like. It’s just connected with clubs and resources,” said Cara Webb, senior student services specialist for Student Life at the Southern and Dobson campus.

MCC currently offers a variety of 35 clubs on campus from the Student Entrepreneur Club to the Adventure Association. Clubs that are open to new members and have registered a table with Student Life will be at the event.

If students are interested in a specific club that isn’t at the event and doesn’t currently exist on campus, students are able to submit a club request through the Student Life department.

The student will need to find a full-time faculty member that is willing to be their club advisor, obtain 25 signatures from other students on campus and have at least five students that are active members of the club.

“We just want students to get involved and have an outside of the classroom experience,” said Webb. “What we don’t want is students to just come here, go to class, and go home. We just want them to have fun on campus while they’re here and just join clubs and meet people and honestly just have a good time on campus,” Webb added.

Students that participate in club rush also have the opportunity to earn a free lunch and a chance to win a set of tickets to the Phoenix Zoo. The Student Life department will provide passport booklets for attendees to collect stamps as they go through the event, all you have to do is have your passport stamped at each table you stop at to qualify for the prize.
