Mesa football climbs national ranks to 14: rout Pima CC

The Mesa Thunderbirds football team rolled to an easy victory against Pima Community College, 41-20.

With the win, the TBirds move to 3-0 and move up in the national polls to 14. Pima started the scoring first after they recovered a Mesa fumbled snap.

But the TBirds answered right back with a scoring drive when Blake Kemp connected with Cody Saul, who made an incredible one handed catch with a defender draped all over him, in the back of the endzone.

Mesa scored again when running back Cedric Simmons bust one up the middle of the field, out running the two safeties the last 20 yards into the end zone.

The TBirds went into halftime with a 26-13 advantage. It was all Mesa after the half, as the TBirds outscored the Aztecs 15-7.

Mesa used a steady six play drive capped by Michael Allen seven yard touchdown run to start off the half.

Then it was the stingy Mesa defence that kept the Aztecs in check the rest of the game.  Blake Kemp threw for 306 yards on 22-37 passing attempts, with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

He also carried the ball six times for 30 yards. Cody Saul was Kemps main passing target as he caught seven passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Michael Allen caught four passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

The TBirds will head to Snow College Sept. 21 and then will be back in action at John D. Riggs Stadium against Arizona Western Sept. 28.
