The genetically modified food industry is at its peak, with corporations Monsanto and Biotechnology Industry Organization at the forefront of hybrid or genetically modified seeds and foods distributing to the country and world.
Genetically modified food has made it possible for farmers to grow more harvest and according to Monsanto they, “help farmers grow more yield sustainably so they can produce more and conserve more.”
Genetically modified food allows the mass production of food which allows farmers and the genetically modified food industry to prosper economically, conserve energy, and supply the world with the food it needs.
There is an aspect of genetically modified foods that makes health advocates uneasy. The supposed effects of genetically modified food are cancer provoking, severe allergic reactions, and other life shortening effects.
The catalyst for the anger of many anti-genetically modified activists is that it’s not required by the FDA for genetically modified food to be listed as so on the nutritional facts label.
While genetically modified food is providing an excellent and environmentally considerate way of farming and food production, the true long term results and possibly negative effects on the human body have yet to be seen.
“In more than a decade of documented use there have been absolutely no evidence of any safety or health related effects,” said Karen Batra representative of Biotechnology Industry Organization.
When asked of the positive benefits of genetically modified foods, Batra commented, “The technologies allow farmers to do more crops on less land, implement more environmentally friendly farming practices they don’t have to till soil, or irrigate as often or use as many pesticides.
