Race intensifies for Mesa mayor

Nick Kosmider

The race for mayor of the city of Mesa has been heating up lately and on Jan. 22 the spotlight will be on MCC as the three candidates, Rex Griswold, Steve Smith and Claudia Waters, come to campus to participate in a community forum. The forum comes just over a month before the March 11 election.

Among the hot button topics concerning city voters this year will be the issue of a property tax.

Smith, who is the only one of the three candidates without city council experience, says the city must improve its credibility in order to gain the trust of voters.

“The first thing is to create that trust and that confidence in government, and everything else will sort of take place by natural forces,” Smith said during the candidates’ appearance at a Mesa rotary meeting.

The candidates will be speaking on a number of other issues as well.

The forum, which will take place in the Navajo Room from 12-2 p.m., is open to students as well as members of the community.
