Soccer coach takes one for the team

Matt Schaeffer

Students lined up Sept. 30th in MCC’s courtyard from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. for some cold treats and coach dunking.Mesa’s Men and Women’s soccer teams in, cooperation with student life, set up a dunking tank to promote their upcoming games.

“We’re promoting our soccer game against Chandler-Gilbert,” said Goalkeeper Cesar Bulna

“They’re our biggest rival,” said Forward Duane Alexander

Aside from the dunk tank, the teams had other goodies and fun things.

“We have dribbling over here, juggling, and cotton candy and free snow cones,” said Alexander.

Head soccer coach Andrew Guarneri was the chosen victim for the dunk tank.

Guarneri was dropped several times into the water within a matter of minutes.

“Coach Drew, that’s a good look for you,” shouted out student life employee Zona Bailey.

Zona, who helped organize the event with the teams, then ran up to the tank and hit the lever sending Guarneri back into the water.

After several attempts to dunk him the right way with the balls, Zona reverted to her previous strategy by again using her hands to drop the coach right back in.

The Men’s team (5-7) will be looking to get a step closer to a winning record against Chandler-Gilbert.

The Women’s team (1-10) are after their second win in three tries after dropping their first nine.
