The ASMCC Ad Hoc Committee met on Wednesday, Sept. 29, to create legislation that will be presented to the MCC senate on Oct. 1. The committee was gathered to discuss the White House Summit on Community Colleges.
The summit will be hosted by Jill Biden, and will address the needs of community colleges, their role in job-training, and ensuring more college completion in America.
David Perry, Senate Chair, explained that MCC would be putting together a resolution of MCC’s needs that would go with the representative for the Maricopa Community College District to the summit in Washington D.C.
“Student senate has decided to discuss this, and submit an official statement which will be going with the Maricopa community college district representative, a student from Glendale community college,” Perry said.
All students are allowed to attend this session of senate Perry said.
Discussion addressed career services in helping the campaign for college completion.
“[There was] a focus on career services to make sure that there was really kind of an end in sight for students. That they have something they are working towards,” said Perry.
Dr. Pan, President of MCC, spoke to senate about the upcoming summit.
“Community colleges have done a very good job of opening the doors to citizens throughout the nation. Yet, one of the continuous challenges for community colleges is the completion rate,” Pan stated.
The White House Summit on Community Colleges will be held in Washington D.C. on Oct 5.
