T-Bird’s soccer takes out South Mountain in overtime

Ryan McCullough

In a back and forth game between South Mountain Community College, MCC men’s soccer team pulled out a win in overtime. For the first half, MCC kept the majority of the play on SMCC’s side.

MCC managed two shots in the first five minutes. Both flew above SMCC’s goal.

At the seven minute mark, SMCC had their first solid attack, coming uncomfortably close to the MCC goal.

MCC goalie, Cesar Buelna, came right back with a monster goal kick straight to the foot of Taylor Hough. Nothing came of the attack though.

Nineteen minutes into the half, the SMCC goalie received a furious kick to the ankle that left him rolling back and forth on the ground. After some brief medical attention, he returned to the goal.

Four minutes later MCC got off a low cross that ended in Travis Brown shooting the ball over the goal.

With 20 minutes left in the half, SMCC got off a low shot that was routinely stopped by Buelna.

MCC’s first spark of greatness came in the 36 minute. Hough stole the ball from an SMCC player, then took it around the goalie to put up a point for MCC.

Before the half was up, Brown got a break away that ended in a blocked shot.

MCC started the second half strong. Seven minutes in, Hough gracefully put the ball through the legs of SMCC’s goalie to add another goal to his name.

It took SMCC ten more minutes to muster the necessary effort to score.

Thirty minutes into the second half, SMCC kicked from a set-piece that ended in a gigantic header that hit the ground then the top of the MCC goal.

It was not until overtime that Duane Alexander found the back of the net to win the game for MCC.
