Save money during holiday season without losing cheer

Although the economy has been rough, it isn’t ruining many MCC students’ holiday season. Students are being more creative than ever as well as being wise with their spending habits.”This year I am doing things differently. I have made my own Christmas cards with scrapbook clippings and even used wrapping paper left over from last year,” said MCC student Kylie Henderson.

“I usually spend a good 20 dollars on Christmas cards during the holiday season but this year I wanted to save money and do something original, but still something very cute,” Henderson said.

ASU student Mike Perhach is saving money this holiday season by cutting back on his spending as well as limiting gifts.

“I am minimizing the cost of purchases of presents this year. Normally I would spend a lot more money per person, but this year I’m cutting back to under 100 dollars per person. I am also spending more time shopping rather than just finding something and buying it,” Perhach said.

Another student is taking advantage of this holiday season to use his artistic skills for holiday gifts.

“I think that making a gift is more thoughtful and meaningful then buying something from a department store,” said MCC student Clint Richardson.

“The gift is a black and white etched drawing of my girlfriend’s favorite band on special paper that I will later frame and give to her,” Richardson said.

Student Cody Whalen recommends students look through newspapers for coupons to save money on gift ideas.

“I think students should limit their shopping sprees and buy things they need, not necessarily things they want,” said Whalen. “Also take the time to look through your junk mail because there can be some good deals that you wouldn’t normally notice.
