Students can prevent stress during finals

Kristin Villalpando

Students often find themselves stressing out over many issues, but this month it is all about one thing: finals. At the beginning of the year, students start off motivated, focused and excited to start school again, promising to stay focused and be prepared for the coming semester.

“We go through the whole semester learning the essential things that we will need to know for the final, trying to write down every word because you know the one thing you don’t write down is going to be the bonus question on the final.

“But it seems like even though I write it all down, I find myself up late the night before trying to cram the whole semester into my brain,” student Erika Peterson said.

Many students find themselves in this situation and although there is no one solution to successful studying, there are ways to get all that information down and feel confident about taking those dreaded finals.

It’s a good idea for students to schedule and balance difficult classes with easier or enjoyable ones, so they are not stressed about taking all their difficult finals and tests in the same week.

Some students take another long-term approach.

Amy Dayton is part of a study group that meets at least once a week to keep up with the material throughout the entire year.

“Since I have joined the study group, finals are no problem. I used to stress and do the whole coffee cram sessions,” Dayton said.

“In the group, we cover the current information and cover the past information, so when it comes to the end, we have already learned everything and it’s no problem,” she said.

“You barely even need to study since you were studying all the material thoughout the semester,” Dayton said.

Don’t let yourself be the one up the night before the final drinking coffee or energy drinks wondering what happened.

Plan a reasonable schedule and stay on top of things learned previously during the semester to prevent stressful overloads.
