Scholarship offers student journalist to study politics, media in Germany

The German Academic Exchange Service or DAAD is offering a once in a lifetime experience for students who are majoring in journalism around the country. The program allows students to study journalism in Germany as well as work the field, and get paid.
“Students will be able to get experience with the latest news and developments in German politics, society and media,” said Laura Montgomery, program and information officer for the internship.
“The different seminars that students will be attending on a daily basis will be led by very prominent figures from German universities, businesses and publications,” she said.
“It is very rare that American undergraduates get a chance to have such intensive direct exposure to such high-ranking individuals,” she added.
Students are provided with paid housing in this internship and live in student dormitories.
The dorms house both German and other international students.
Students will also be provided with a monthly stipend of $847 and could be as much as $1,238 depending where the student is traveling from and the duration of their internship.
The program will also provide health and accident insurance, but the required program fee is $184.
“You have to be willing to try something new and demanding. This is an intensive study and internship experience, not a tourism program in disguise,” Montgomery said.
“One drawback is that there are few undergraduate students who possess the ideal combination of German language proficiency as well as a strong background and interest in journalism and mass communications. So if you have these two qualifications, definitely apply,” she added.
All applications are due on Jan. 30.
In early March, 40 finalists will then be invited to New York City for selection interviews with an independent selection committee.
DAAD will provide the students with $300 for a plane ticket to the interview.
The 20 successful applicants will then be notified by DAAD.
