Policy to enforce tution payment if student drops class improperly

Jesse Mock

This semester MCCD initiated a new district-wide policy that could affect students’ wallets who get purged from their classes after the 100 percent refund date for their class. The policy states that any student who gets purged from their class for any reason after the refund date will be charged the entire cost of the class.

This includes students who get purged for non-payment.

The 100 percent refund date for a class varies on the length of the class.
The normal refund date for a full semester class is seven days after the first day of the class.

Jennifer Edwards, an MCC curriculum technician, believes the new policy will not affect that many students.

Edwards believes that most students drop their classes before the refund date.

Edwards advises students who have not paid their tuition to drop before the refund date or enroll in the payment plan available through cashier services.

The payment plan will keep students from being purged without having to pay the entire amount upfront.

The payment plan can be enrolled by students online for a fee of $20.

The policy has been in every other district college since last fall but MCC was the only college to wait until this semester to put the policy in effect.

The main thing a student needs to understand is that if they register for a class and never pay for that class they will still be charged the full price.

Advisers are stressing to students that the new policy change will have little effect as long as students are responsible enough to drop their class within the refund period or sign up for the payment plan if they are not able to come up with all of the money up front.
