Students to vote May 5 on proposed ASMCC constitutional amendments

The student government of MCC (ASMCC) has pushed for student involvement on campus, and the new proposed changes being made to the school’s constitution were a preparation to accomplish that. There were major reforms going on over the last two semesters, amendments and restructuring built to have an effect on the student body.

There are two tasks that ASMCC was mainly focused on accomplishing: to represent MCC, and provide events on campus those students can get involved in.

“There has been an immense growth in student enrollment in general, and the changes to the constitution are needed to have better organization and facilitate our main tasks,” said Spencer Morgan, the 2009-10 ASMCC board president.

“We want to clarify the roles of our officers. We are creating new jobs and responsibilities to give students more of a voice through their student government,” Morgan said.

The new job responsibilities included a new commission-style cabinet and, although the executive board will not change, new committees like the “Events Programming Council” will provide coordination for clubs and their publicity.

“The amendment changes we are making to the constitution are not drastic, they are just to adjust to new changes in our student population, specifically to help create student awareness,” Morgan said. “As all of these changes are put in place, we also plan to monitor their effectiveness to be able to measure student involvement.”

Their new positions are primarily about policy, to extend that clarity and interest in MCC to their fellow students.

For more information prior to voting, copies of the current constitution and bylaws are available in the student government office or at http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/students/asmcc/.

The amendments are to be voted upon by students on May 5, 2010 via electronic ballot at https://orion.mesacc.edu/portal/.
